Getting Started
It depends on your goal. If you have never driven or just want practice, start with One-on-One Private Lessons (a learner’s permit is required). If you are a teen under 18 with a Virginia permit, completed Driver’s Education, and 45 hours of practice, you are ready for Teen Behind the Wheel. Adults with a permit and experience choose Adult Behind the Wheel if Driver’s Education is done, or the Waiver Program if it is not. Failed the DMV permit test three times? Start with One-on-One Private Lessons. They are built for beginners and nervous drivers, with step-by-step practice on parking, turns, lane changes, and residential roads. A learner’s permit is required. Our licensing programs are for drivers who already have experience, so build your confidence first, then move into a licensing program when you are ready.
In person we serve Ashburn, Leesburg, Sterling, Herndon, Chantilly, Aldie, South Riding, Brambleton, Reston, Purcellville, Dulles, and nearby Loudoun County areas, with free pickup and drop-off in most areas. We are not able to serve Manassas. Our online courses are available statewide across Virginia.
Yes, for the road test. Drive Well Driving School is DMV-approved to administer the road skills test in-house, so teens and qualifying adults never take a separate DMV road test. We test you during your program, issue the certificate, and submit the paperwork. You still get your learner’s permit at the DMV first, and the DMV mails your physical license after we submit your completion.
The path depends on your age. Teens need a Virginia learner’s permit, completed Driver’s Education, 45 hours of supervised practice, and the Behind the Wheel program, after which Drive Well issues the provisional license and submits the paperwork to the DMV. Adults need a learner’s permit and either Adult Behind the Wheel (if Driver’s Education is complete) or the Waiver Program (if it is not). We handle the DMV paperwork for you.

Teen Licensing
The student must have a valid Virginia learner’s permit, a completed Driver’s Education certificate (the DEC card, online or classroom), and at least 45 hours of supervised practice (30 daytime and 15 nighttime). This is a licensing program, not a beginner course. See the Teen Behind the Wheel page for details.
The 45 supervised hours are required by Virginia before the licensing program. We recommend starting with One-on-One Private Lessons to build experience and confidence, then enrolling in Teen Behind the Wheel once the hours are complete.
After your teen completes the program, Drive Well issues the provisional license and submits the paperwork to the DMV. There is no separate DMV road test. The DMV then mails the hard-copy license, usually within a few weeks.
It is seven sessions. Each session is 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observation. Virginia requires both driving and observation periods, and we follow those requirements exactly.
Bring your Virginia learner’s permit, your Driver’s Education certificate (DEC card), and your signed Drive Well contract. Students must complete 45 hours of practice before starting the Teen Behind the Wheel program.
Yes. As long as the student has completed 30 hours of daytime and 15 hours of nighttime supervised driving, they can begin Behind the Wheel.
Yes. For drivers under 18 in Virginia: Curfew, no driving from midnight to 4 AM except for work, supervised activities, with a licensed adult, or emergencies. Passengers, usually only one passenger under 21 during the first year, then up to three (with exceptions for family, school activities, a licensed adult, or emergencies); learner’s permit holders may carry only one passenger under 18. Cell phones, no use while driving, even hands-free, except for emergencies when safely parked. Violations can lead to license suspension.
If a driver under 18 gets three demerit-point traffic violations, the DMV suspends the permit or license for at least one year, or until they turn 18, whichever is longer.
You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old, pass the DMV knowledge test, and provide the required documents at the DMV. Teens must also complete Driver’s Education. Adults can get a permit without a Driver’s Education course.
Adult Licensing
If you have a learner’s permit, driving experience, and a completed Driver’s Education certificate, choose Adult Behind the Wheel. If you have a permit and experience but no Driver’s Education yet, choose the Waiver Program, which includes the required Driver’s Education. Both are licensing programs, not beginner courses.
It depends on the path you choose. On the standard DMV route, adults 18 and older do not need Driver’s Education — you hold your permit for 60 days and take the road test at the DMV. But for our waiver programs, which skip both the DMV road test and the 60-day wait, Virginia requires a Driver’s Education certificate. Already have it? Choose Adult Behind the Wheel. Don’t have it? The Waiver Program includes the online Driver’s Ed course.
The Waiver Program is for adults who have a Virginia learner’s permit and driving experience but have not completed Driver’s Education. It includes the 30-hour online Driver’s Education course (with the final test in person at our office) plus the 7-day in-car licensing program. On completion we issue the certificate and submit your paperwork to the DMV.
Driver Privilege Card applicants may not qualify for the road test waiver under Virginia DMV rules. You can still train with us, but your testing path may be different. Call or text 703-817-5047 before enrolling and we will confirm your eligibility and recommend the right program.
Your experience is valuable, but Virginia still requires a Virginia learner’s permit to enroll in a licensing program, and the DMV process applies here. If you hold a permit and have experience, the Waiver Program or Adult Behind the Wheel is usually the right path. Call or text 703-817-5047 and we will point you to the correct one.
We teach all ages. You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for a learner’s permit and begin learning to drive. We work with teens and adults alike, with lessons tailored to each driver’s comfort and skill level.
Online Courses (Statewide Virginia)
We offer three DMV-approved online courses, available statewide in Virginia: Online Driver’s Education, the Online Permit Re-Examination course, and the Online Driver Improvement Clinic. All are self-paced. Driver’s Education has an in-person final test; the other two are completed entirely online.
It is a 30-hour Virginia DMV-approved course, self-paced, and you can start any day. The final test is taken in person at our office, and for teens the 90-minute parent-teen session is completed in person on the same day. The fee is $140 (or $147.50 if paying by card). You must be at least 15 to enroll.
Yes. The classroom hours are online, but Virginia requires the final exam to be completed in person at our office. We hold final tests on weekends, and you reserve your spot online once you finish the course. For teens, the parent-teen session happens the same day. It is for anyone who has failed the Virginia DMV permit (knowledge) test three times. It is an 8-hour, DMV-approved, self-paced online course. When you finish, we email your certificate the same business day, and you take it to any DMV office to test again. The fee is $120 (or $125 by card). Enroll on the Permit Re-Examination page.
If you are under 18 and have not completed Driver’s Education, you must finish Driver’s Education first before enrolling in the Permit Re-Examination course. Adults 18 and older do not need Driver’s Education first.
It is an 8-hour, DMV-approved, self-paced course for licensed drivers who have a ticket, DMV points, a court requirement, or a DMV requirement. It can also earn five safe-driving points and may help with an insurance discount. The fee is $99. When you finish, we update your DMV record the same business day during business hours. Once your payment is received, we send your course access within about two hours during business hours. To avoid delay, text a screenshot or transaction ID with the student’s full name to 703-817-5047 right after paying so we can verify and activate immediately.
This usually happens when the course is opened from a saved or bookmarked link instead of the original access email. Always open the course directly from the email we sent, not a bookmark. On a phone, switch to landscape mode. If it still will not load, text us at 703-817-5047 with a screenshot and we will fix it quickly.
Virginia requires us to verify your identity to update your DMV record and issue your certificate. The upload is secure and only Drive Well staff can see it. For the Driver Improvement course, upload your driver’s license or learner’s permit (front and back). For Permit Re-Examination, upload any valid photo ID. If you are under 18 completing Re-Examination, also upload your Driver’s Education card or certificate.
Yes to both. All of our online courses are approved by the Virginia DMV and available statewide. They are mobile-friendly, and on a phone we recommend landscape mode for the best experience. The courses are self-paced and available 24/7, so you can start any day and finish on your own schedule.
Yes. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID when you create your account. This name goes on your DMV certificate and cannot be changed after it is issued.
Our online courses are non-refundable once access is issued. If you have a special circumstance, contact us at 703-817-5047 and we will review it case by case.
Pricing & Payment
Teen Behind the Wheel is $375 and Adult Behind the Wheel is $390. The Waiver Program is $525. One-on-One Private Lessons start at $85. Online Driver’s Education is $140. We accept all credit and debit cards (5% processing fee), cash, Zelle, Venmo, and checks.
We do not offer payment plans at this time.
It varies by experience and comfort. We generally suggest 7 to 10 sessions for true beginners, and around 5 sessions for those who already have parking-lot and residential experience.
Scheduling & Logistics
Yes. Free pickup and drop-off is included with our behind-the-wheel programs in most service areas. Sessions can start from your home, school, or a nearby meeting point.
After you register, our office contacts you to schedule. It helps to share a time window that works for you, for example 3 PM to 7 PM on certain days, and we will match you with an instructor. Scheduling depends on student and instructor availability.
Once you are signed up, we assign your instructor and send their contact information so they can reach out about scheduling. We also email your contract, which you sign and return before lessons begin.
Yes. Our instructors are DMV-certified and FBI-cleared, and lessons are conducted in insured, dual-control vehicles. The instructor can intervene at any time, which keeps new drivers safe while they learn.
Drive Well is a Virginia DMV-approved school based in Ashburn serving Loudoun County and Northern Virginia. We offer DMV-certified, FBI-cleared instructors, dual-control cars, flexible evening and weekend scheduling, free pickup and drop-off, and a strong record of helping teens and adults get licensed.
