Driving School in Reston VA
Behind the wheel training for teens and adults, with pickup from your house or from South Lakes High School. Finish our program and you take your road test with us instead of waiting on an appointment at the DMV.
We are a Virginia DMV certified Class B driving school. Our instructors have put more than 7,000 licensed drivers on the road, and we have been teaching in Northern Virginia since 2015.
You do not have to go back to the DMV for the road test
This is the part most Reston parents call us about, so let’s get it out of the way first.
Virginia lets a certified driving school give the road skills test in place of the DMV. When your teen finishes the program with us, we conduct that final test and issue the certificate. You take the paperwork to the DMV, and they issue the license. No sitting in line at Sterling or Fair Oaks hoping there is an appointment before graduation.
For teens we issue the DTS-B certificate. For adults it is the DTS-D, which does the same thing on the road test and, for drivers 21 and over, also removes the 60 day permit holding period.
One honest caveat. If you hold a Driver Privilege Card rather than a standard learner’s permit, the road test waiver may not apply to your situation. Call us before you enroll and we will tell you straight, rather than taking your money and finding out later.
What we teach in Reston
Reston is not an easy place to learn to drive, and that is actually a good thing. A student who can merge onto the Dulles Toll Road at rush hour, handle the traffic circles, and park at Reston Town Center on a Saturday is a student who is genuinely ready for a license.
Our lessons work the real roads your teen will be driving anyway. Reston Parkway. Wiehle Avenue. Sunset Hills Road past the Metro. Fairfax County Parkway. Baron Cameron. Glade and Soapstone through the neighborhoods, then the harder stuff once the basics are solid.
Teen Behind the Wheel
Seven in-car sessions of about 50 minutes each, plus the final road skills exam. Ends with the DTS-B certificate that replaces the DMV road test.
Teen program detailsAdult Behind the Wheel
Same structure, built for adults learning late or drivers licensed in another country. Ends with the DTS-D certificate.
Adult program detailsPrivate Lessons
One hour at a time, no program required. Most people book these before a road test or to fix one specific thing like parallel parking or highway merging.
Book a private lessonAdult driver education bundle, $525
Classroom driver education plus the full behind the wheel program in one package. If you are between 18 and 20 and applying for a first Virginia license, read the note further down this page about the law changing on January 1, 2027, because this bundle is about to become a requirement rather than an option.
We pick up. You do not drive to us.
Every lesson in Reston starts wherever your student already is. Home, or the school parking lot at the end of the day. Parents of high school students almost always pick the school option, because it means nobody has to leave work early or rearrange an afternoon.

If you are 18 to 20, the rules change on January 1, 2027
Virginia passed a law that takes effect at the start of 2027. From that date, a first time applicant between 18 and 20 has to hold a learner’s permit for 90 days and complete a state approved driver education program. Both, not either.
Two things worth knowing. First, if you finish before December 31, 2026, the requirement never applies to you. Second, the classroom hours alone do not satisfy it. Virginia defines a driver education program as classroom plus behind the wheel, which is why the $525 bundle exists.
If you are 21 or over, nothing changes for you. You still hold the permit 60 days or complete driver education, and our DTS-D certificate handles it.
Getting started in Reston
- Get the learner’s permit at the DMV. The closest one to Reston is on South Sterling Boulevard, and Fair Oaks Mall or Gallows Road in Tysons are the other options.
- Register with us online or by phone and tell us your pickup address or school.
- We send a schedule. You confirm the times work before you pay anything.
- Seven in-car sessions, then the road skills exam with your instructor.
- We issue the certificate. You take it to the DMV and walk out licensed.

Other areas we serve
We are based in Loudoun County and Reston sits at the eastern edge of what we cover. If you are closer to one of these, start there instead.
Questions Reston families actually ask
If yours is not here, call 703-817-5047 and ask a person.
Do you really pick up from South Lakes High School?
Yes, and it is the most common pickup we run in Reston. Your student walks out at dismissal, the instructor is waiting, and the lesson happens before they would have gotten home anyway. We also pick up from Herndon High School for families in north Reston, and from home if that works better.
So my teen never has to take the road test at the DMV?
Correct. We conduct the road skills exam at the end of the program and issue the DTS-B certificate. You bring that to the DMV along with the other paperwork and they issue the license. You are not waiting for a DMV road test appointment.
How much does behind the wheel cost in Reston?
$375 for teens, $390 for adults. Both include seven in-car sessions of roughly 50 minutes each and the final road skills exam. Private lessons start at $85 an hour if you only want a few. The adult bundle with classroom driver education included is $525. Everything is listed on the pricing page.
Reston is in Fairfax County and you are based in Loudoun. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Our certification is issued by the Virginia DMV and it is valid statewide, not county by county. Reston is inside our regular in-person service area and our instructors are there every week. The only thing county lines affect is which DMV office you visit for your permit and your license.
I am an adult who never learned. Is this awkward?
It is a real part of our business, and it is more common than people think. Adults who moved here from another country, parents who never needed a car until now, people who had a bad experience years ago and stopped. Same seven sessions, taught at whatever pace you need, and the DTS-D certificate at the end. Nobody is going to make you feel behind.
How soon can we start?
It depends on the season. Through the summer we are usually booked two to three weeks out. From September through the spring the calendar opens up considerably and we can often start within a week. Call and we will tell you the next real opening rather than a guess.
Does my student need the learner’s permit before the first lesson?
Yes. Virginia requires a valid learner’s permit before anyone can get behind the wheel with an instructor. Get that first at the DMV, then book with us. If the permit knowledge test is the sticking point and it has been failed three times, our permit re-examination course is what unlocks the next attempt.
Can we do the classroom part online?
Yes. Our online driver’s education course covers the classroom requirement and you take it at home on your own schedule. Reston is inside the area we can serve for that course, because the road skills test at the end still has to happen in person with an instructor.
My child turns 18 next year. Does the new law affect us?
It might. Starting January 1, 2027, first time applicants aged 18 to 20 must hold a permit for 90 days and complete a full driver education program, both requirements together. If the license is issued before December 31, 2026, none of it applies. If it will be after, the classroom hours alone are not enough under Virginia’s definition, which is why the $525 bundle exists. Call us and we will work backward from your date.
I failed the road test three times. What now?
After three failures the DMV requires additional training before you can try again. That is exactly what our road test re-examination program is for. Call us and we will explain what the DMV is asking for in your specific case.
Which instructor will we get?
One of three, and you will have the same one for the whole program rather than a different person each session. That continuity matters more than people expect, because your instructor learns what your student is actually struggling with. If you have a language preference, tell us when you book. Our team covers English, Urdu, and Punjabi.
Do you teach highway and toll road driving?
Yes, once the fundamentals are solid. Merging onto the Dulles Toll Road is genuinely one of the harder things a new Reston driver has to do, and we would rather your student learn it with an instructor in the car than alone on a Tuesday morning. Same with Fairfax County Parkway and the Reston Parkway interchanges.
