Behind‑the‑Wheel for Teens (DMV‑Approved) – Northern Virginia
Our DMV‑approved Behind‑the‑Wheel for teens program is for students under 18 who’ve completed classroom Driver’s Ed and are ready for safe, structured in‑car training with certified instructors and dual‑control vehicles.
Teen Drivers (Under 18)
Completed your classroom Driver’s Ed? This is the final in‑car requirement before your provisional license.
Learners with a Permit
You must hold a valid Virginia learner’s permit before enrolling in Behind‑the‑Wheel training.
Note: Virginia requires both driving and observation periods during Behind‑the‑Wheel. We follow those requirements exactly.
How It Works
We follow Virginia’s required steps for teen licensing, taught by DMV‑licensed instructors.
Learner’s Permit and Driver’s Education
A valid Virginia learner’s permit and Driver’s Ed certificate are required to begin Behind-the-Wheel.
Fulfill Practice Hours
Log 45 total hours (15 at night) with a parent/guardian in addition to this course.
Complete 7 Driving Sessions
Each session includes 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observation with another student.
Road Skills Test
The road test is given during your last session by a DMV‑certified instructor.
Provisional License
Upon successful completion, you receive a temporary/provisional license while DMV mails the permanent card.

DMV Requirements for Beind The Wheel Teens
Teen Eligibility
- At least 16 years and 3 months old
- Hold a learner’s permit for at least 9 months
- Complete a 30‑hour classroom Driver’s Education course
- Log 45 hours (15 at night) with a parent/guardian
Behind‑the‑Wheel
- 7 driving periods (50 minutes each)
- 7 observation periods (50 minutes each)
- Conducted in a dual‑control vehicle with a licensed instructor
Road Skills Test
- Administered during the last session
- Pass to receive a provisional/temporary license while DMV mails the permanent card
